Makinde establishes committees to review the Supreme Court judgment on LG autonomy. Learn about the implications and next steps.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has established two committees to examine the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on local government autonomy.

Monday saw Makinde form the two committees.

The third level of governance, local government, was given autonomy by the Supreme Court last week, as noted by Obasanjonews.com.

During a meeting on Monday, Makinde stated that his administration would not permit the state’s citizens to be negatively impacted by the ruling made by the Supreme Court.

Local government chairmen, representatives from ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as the leaderships of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Trade Union Congress (TUC) were present at the meeting

Speaking to the crowd, the governor insisted that the ruling had left a constitutional gap that would provide many difficulties for local governments.

The two committees’ constitutions were then declared by him.

He continued by saying that the two committees would examine the Supreme Court ruling and provide any appropriate guidance.

“I called this meeting because, although we haven’t seen the Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court’s judgement, I felt that we should take the initiative and talk about the Court’s ruling regarding the financial autonomy of local government councils. In my opinion, a gap has been created between the ruling and the Federal Republic of Nigeria Constitution, which we have all sworn to uphold.

“The law is the law, and certainly, we should go to court when there is a dispute. However, it is incumbent upon us to search for indigenous solutions that can guarantee openness and prevent harm to our people. This is due to the fact that the grass will always lose in an elephant fight.

This is what I’m saying because Oyo State will emerge from this even more resilient. We are folks who understand what is best for our community,” he remarked.
