The Imo State Police Command has officially distanced itself from the confessional statements made by three suspects who were arrested in connection with the alleged kidnapping and killing of Retired Major General Richard Duru.
The incident took place on September 27, 2023, along Bishops Court, Area 7 Orji/Uratta Owerri, where the retired general was abducted and his black Mercedes Benz G.L. 450 car was stolen by a suspected kidnapping syndicate.
According to a press release signed by the Command’s spokesman, ASP Henry Okoye, the police have refuted the claims made by the suspects and emphasized that the Army chief is still alive.
The police are actively working to rescue the victim and apprehend the abductors.
The Police Commissioner, CP Aboki Danjuma, has established a special unit to investigate the incident, and they have made significant progress based on the confessional statements of the three suspects and technical intelligence.

The release further states that the Command held a press briefing on May 16, 2024, to update the public on the progress made in the case.
The three arrested suspects claimed to be members of the Proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate Eastern Security Network (ESN), and allegedly confessed to kidnapping and murdering the retired general.
However, the Command has not yet confirmed these allegations and is still conducting a thorough investigation.
The Imo State Police Command urges the people of Imo State and the general public, particularly the victim’s family, to remain hopeful and disregard the confessional statements made by the three suspects during the press briefing.
The investigation team, led by Commissioner of Police CP Aboki Danjuma, is dedicated to uncovering the truth and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
The Command assures the public that every effort is being made to ensure the safety and well-being of Retired Major General Richard Duru.
