Macky Sall Resigns as Paris Pact Special Envoy, Marking End of Diplomatic Role
Macky Sall, Senegal’s ex-president, officially steps down as Special Envoy for the Paris Pact. His departure marks a significant shift in the international diplomatic landscape.
Former Senegalese President Macky Sall has resigned from his role as Special Envoy for the Paris Pact for People and the Planet (4P), a position he was appointed to by French President Emmanuel Macron in 2023.
His resignation occurs just as he was nominated to lead the opposition coalition, Takku Wallou.
This has also been viewed as a decision that will allow him to focus on the upcoming Senegal legislative elections scheduled for November 17.
In the letter, Macky Sall expressed his desire to “prevent any potential conflict of interest or incompatibility” related to his candidacy in the legislative elections.
After Macky Sall chose not to pursue a third term, Emmanuel Macron offered him the position of Special Envoy for the Paris Pact.
Sall’s possible comeback to politics, following his decision to step aside for Bassirou Diomaye Faye, represents a pivotal moment in the legislative campaign.
Six months following his defeat in the presidential race, his coalition is working to regain momentum and unify the opposition with the goal of challenging the ruling Pastef party’s dominance in parliament.
