M23 Rebels Strengthen Grip on Goma Amid Escalating Conflict
M23 rebels have tightened their control over Goma, raising concerns about the escalating conflict in the region. Get the latest updates on the situation and its humanitarian impact.
The M23 rebels are increasing their control over Goma, the largest city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Following their capture of significant parts of the city, a rebel spokesperson asserted that achieving peace remains their foremost priority.
Willy Ngoma, an M23 spokesperson, stated that they have released the 289 mercenaries who were captured and allowed them to return home. He urged the residents of Goma to remain calm as peace has been restored. Emphasizing their role as a people’s army committed to ensuring security and maintaining peace without engaging in theft or violence, he assured that there is no need for concern. Ngoma also called on everyone to report any remaining armed bandits hiding so they can collaborate with M23 in putting an end to such threats.
The spokesperson is listed on the UN Security Council’s sanctions for actions that undermine peace and security in the country.
Meanwhile, residents report that the arrival of the rebels has left them without certain essentials.
Fiston Bafaluma, a resident of Goma, expressed his desire for peace: “All we need is peace. We don’t have electricity or internet; there’s nothing here. We’ve been confined to our homes for three days since Monday and only ventured out briefly today—it’s unbearable. We’ve seen Willy Ngoma around, but what we truly want is peace everywhere—not just here in Goma—but also where our brothers live.”
A UN report indicates that more than a third of the population in North Kivu province has been displaced from their homes, and capturing the city is expected to exacerbate the situation.
