In the recent Bauchi local elections, the Labour Party (LP), Young Progressives Party (YPP), and African Action Congress (AAC) won key councillor seats, showcasing their growing influence in local governance.
During the local government council elections in Bauchi, a state located in Nigeria’s North-East zone and overseen by Governor Bala Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), various opposition parties successfully claimed multiple councillor seats.
The councillor for Wandi Ward in the Dass Local Government Area, is now Samira Maikano and she was elected through the platform of The Young Progressive Party (YPP).
By securing 1,610 votes, she emerged victorious over her closest contender from the PDP party, Bashir Abdullahi who obtained a total of 1,352 votes. The APC was also able to accumulate 230 votes in the election.
At the ward level, Returning Officer Nasiru Hassan declared the results.
1,156 votes in the Papa North Councillorship Seat of Darazo Local Government Area. Yunusa Muhammed from the African Action Congress emerged as the winner while his opponent Ashiru Muhammad of PDP was defeated.
The Returning Officer, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar declared Yunusa Muhammed of the AAC as the winner and elected candidate after fulfilling legal requirements and obtaining the highest number of votes.
Despite not having a candidate, the Labour Party received the greatest number of votes in Lusa Ward within Bogoro Local Government Area. Lucy Yusuf from PDP came second but was announced as the winner by Daniel Gambo, who declared that there were 2,200 votes for Labour Party and 2,168 for PDP while APC got only 275.
There were 323 candidates vying for councillor positions in the state, representing 10 different political parties.
The chairmanship election outcomes are yet to be decided and will be revealed by the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission.
