Chief Iheanyi Frank Chinasa, a prominent member of the Labour Party, has assigned the newly elected Southeast members of the National Assembly the responsibility of drafting legislation that will benefit every region of the geographical zone.
Reminding the federal lawmakers that elections are done, he said that it is now time to cooperate across party lines for the Southeast’s development.
Chinasa said on Monday in Abuja at a meeting with Benjamin Kalu, the member representing Bende Federal Constituency, and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Newsmen received a statement on Tuesday that revealed this.
Chinasa stated that the Southeast Development Commission should be established.
He clarified that if the commission was established, it would play a significant role in tackling the issues preventing the Southeast region’s socioeconomic and infrastructure development.
In order to lessen the difficulties these communities experience, he stated, “The Commission would be instrumental in addressing the lingering effects of the civil war, particularly in areas severely impacted by bombs and erosion.”
It would have the potential to strengthen the local economy. In addition, it would guarantee the development of internal railways and a free trade hub for the five Southeast states. It would also take care of the majority of interstate routes, such as Aba-Port-Harcourt and Ikot-Ekpene-ikwuano-Umuahia.
“If every politician in the Southeast endorsed a single bill to form the Commission, there is a good probability that it would be realised sooner rather than later.”
