In response to the court ruling reinstating Julius Abure as Labour Party chairman, the Caretaker Committee announces plans to file an appeal, furthering the party’s leadership crisis.

On Tuesday, Senator Nenadi Usman, the Chairman of the Labour Party’s Caretaker Committee, announced that her committee plans to appeal the Federal High Court in Abuja’s decision endorsing Julius Abure’s leadership.

In a statement she personally signed, Usman mentioned that she met with Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate; Abia State Governor Alex Otti; and Senator Darlington Nwokocha (Secretary of the LP Caretaker Committee) to discuss the judgment.

The former finance minister acknowledged that the ruling in favor of upholding the Nnewi Convention of the party was issued before the formation of the Caretaker Committee. The leaders have decided to contest this judgement.

The chairman of the LP caretaker committee urged all party members to stay calm and uphold peace while reconciliation efforts are ongoing.

This evening, I met with His Excellency Peter Obi, Governor Alex Otti, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha (Secretary of the LP Caretaker Committee). We discussed today’s judgment.

The case occurred before the Caretaker Committee was formed. However, once they were informed about it, the committee decided to become involved in the case. As a result, we have decided to appeal the judgment accordingly.

“I urge all party members to stay calm and uphold peace as we pursue our reconciliation efforts,” she stated.
