Local Governments Lack Capacity for ₦62,000, Not to Mention ₦250,000 Wage, Says ALGON
The proposed minimum wage by the Organised Labour is unaffordable for the local government administrations in Nigeria, according to the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON).
Aminu Muazu-Maifata, the ALGON National President, expressed this during an interview on Channels Television’s Business Morning segment of Sunrise Daily breakfast programme.
Muazu-Maifata highlighted that the current allocation from the Federal Accounts does not allow any local government administration to meet the ₦62,000 minimum wage proposal by the Federal Government, let alone the ₦250,000 demand of the Organised Labour.
He further mentioned that some local governments have not even started paying their workers the ₦30,000 minimum wage approved in 2019, with many workers still receiving the ₦18,000 wage. Muazu-Maifata emphasized the need for a sustainable and affordable minimum wage to be established.
