Liverpool Dominates Spurs 6-3 to Extend Lead on EPL Table by Four Points
Liverpool delivered a thrilling 6-3 victory over Tottenham, securing their position four points clear on the EPL standings. A masterclass performance at Anfield.
Liverpool surged four points ahead at the top of the Premier League after Mohamed Salah’s outstanding performance led to a remarkable 6-3 victory over Tottenham on Sunday.
Salah gave an outstanding performance, contributing two goals and two assists, as Arne Slot’s team dominated in north London.
Liverpool capitalized on Chelsea’s 0-0 draw against Everton earlier in the day to strengthen their position as title favorites going into the Christmas period.
Tottenham struggled to respond to Liverpool’s clever pressing and exceptional passing and movement, with Egyptian star Salah playing a central role in their powerful attack.
Salah is the sole Premier League player to achieve both double-digit goals (15) and assists (11) this season.
The 32-year-old has become Liverpool’s fourth all-time top scorer, boasting a total of 229 goals.
His two goals moved him ahead of Billy Liddell, leaving only Ian Rush (346), Roger Hunt (285), and Gordon Hodgson (241) in front of him.
Salah’s recent outstanding performance has emphasized the need to settle his future, as his current contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
He is allowed to enter into a pre-contract agreement with clubs abroad starting in January and has suggested on multiple occasions that this might be his final season at Anfield.
Since Slot arrived from Feyenoord in the close-season to replace Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool have been on fire with Salah scoring 18 times across all competitions.
Klopp led Liverpool to their most recent Premier League title in 2020, and it seems increasingly probable that Slot will replicate this success in his debut season.
Under Slot, the Reds have secured victories in 21 out of their 25 matches across all competitions. Additionally, they have a game in hand against Chelsea to further solidify their lead in the title race.
Liverpool showcased their impressive firepower as Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister found the back of the net, putting them firmly in control.
Dominik Szoboszlai secured Liverpool’s third goal just before halftime, and after the break, Salah took charge before Diaz scored once more.
Due to Ange Postecoglou’s commitment to maintaining a high defensive line, Tottenham conceded five or more goals at home in a Premier League game for the first time in 10 years.
Tottenham’s eighth league defeat of the season drops them to 11th place, increasing the pressure on Postecoglou.
Hinting at the demolition to follow, Salah weaved through three Tottenham defenders and hit a shot against the crossbar in the opening moments.
Liverpool’s relentless pressure paid off in the 23rd minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a flawless cross that found Diaz, who headed it past Fraser Forster from six yards out.
During the middle of the first half, Tottenham fans released black balloons to protest against Chairman Daniel Levy’s tenure.
Their spirits sank further in the 36th minute when Liverpool scored once more.
Szoboszlai leapt to connect with Andrew Robertson’s cross, and the ball deflected favorably for Mac Allister, who headed it past Forster from close range.
Liverpool’s concentration slipped momentarily when Mac Allister lost the ball to Dejan Kulusevski, allowing James Maddison to score from 18 yards out.
However, Szoboszlai swiftly reinstated the two-goal advantage by finishing a characteristically sharp attack just seconds before half-time.
Salah smoothly received Szoboszlai’s flick and sent a sharp reverse pass back to the midfielder. Szoboszlai controlled the ball with one touch before sliding his shot through Forster’s legs.
It didn’t take long for the unstoppable Salah to find his way onto the scoresheet.
In the 54th minute, Cody Gakpo threaded a pass into the six-yard box. When Tottenham couldn’t clear it, Salah was ready to tap the ball in.
Seven minutes later, Salah scored his sixth goal in the past five matches across all competitions with another close-range finish from Szoboszlai’s pass.
Dejan Kulusevski scored a volley from just inside the area in the 72nd minute, followed by Dominic Solanke’s close-range goal in the 83rd minute, as Tottenham mounted their comeback.
However, Salah added a fitting conclusion to his impressive performance just two minutes later with an accurate pass that Diaz converted, securing a scoreline that represented Liverpool’s dominance.
