Three Senior Secondary School (SS3) pupils in the Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra were murdered by lightning on Saturday.

Nine male pupils were playing football on the school pitch with their peers when a witness reported that lightning struck them while they were barefoot.

Before the rain started, the coach had called off the practise, but several of the pupils stayed to play football.

The witness claimed that “thunderstorm claps and lightning suddenly enveloped the area, striking the boys in the process.”

The witness claimed that when the pupils yelled and turned to run, a teacher hurried to the pitch.

The pupils were hurried to the school clinic, according to the witness, and from there they were sent to an Awka hospital.

Three of the nine youngsters did not survive, but six of them were revived and are undergoing therapy at this time. Journalists were informed by the witness that their parents had been called.

Hope Egwu, a resident, claimed that after hearing about the occurrence on Sunday, everyone was enthralled.

Parents and supporters flocked into the ward where the survivors were being treated at the hospital in Awka.

Three boys were brought into the hospital dead, but six others were resuscitated, according to a doctor who asked to remain anonymous.

“At present, one youngster remains in the mortuary, while the parents of the other two have taken their corpses away.

The fact that kids were playing barefoot on the pitch is depressing. The force of the lightning would have likely been lessened if they had been wearing boots, he said.

DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra police spokesperson, stated that no police reports had been made regarding the event when he was contacted.

Chukwudi Okani, a consultant pathologist at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital in Awka, discussed the situation and stated that it was a natural tragedy rather than a spiritual one.

In order to prevent electrical currents from flowing in the event of lightning, he suggested that people place thunder arrestors in their buildings.
