The president of the Libyan Football Federation steps down following controversy surrounding the Super Eagles, sparking widespread reactions within the football community.

According to The Libya Observer, Abdelhakim Al-Shalmani has resigned from his position as the President of the Libyan Football Federation.

During a regular meeting of the Federation’s General Assembly on Sunday, his resignation was announced.

In his resignation statement, Al-Shalmani expressed his wish to dissociate himself from what he termed the “failure in Libyan sports.”

He thanked his colleagues and forgave people from every part of the sports sector, saying, “I am grateful to all members of the General Assembly and extend forgiveness to everyone in the sports industry.”

This announcement follows significant allegations made by Nigeria’s Super Eagles about how they were treated by Libyan authorities during their recent visit for the second leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

The team was allegedly left stranded at Al Abraq International Airport for over 16 hours without any support from the Libyan Football Federation, sparking outrage and demands for accountability.

Following the incident, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has vowed to look into the situation and implement suitable measures.
