APC Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje accuses Peter Obi of inciting threats against APC Spokesman Felix Morka, escalating political tensions in Nigeria.

Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has accused Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate from the Labour Party, of libel and inciting his supporters to make death threats against APC spokesman Felix Morka.

Ganduje accused Obi of being untruthful for alleging that Morka threatened him and his family during a recent interview.

Obi claimed that Morka threatened his life after he criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration on New Year’s Day. In light of the alleged threats to himself, his family, and associates from Morka, Obi questioned whether he had “truly crossed the line.”

Obi’s accusation came after a statement attributed to Morka during an interview on Sunday in which he remarked, “Peter Obi has crossed the line numerous times and should deal with whatever consequences come his way.”

In response, Morka claimed that Obi misquoted him and stressed that he never threatened Obi’s life. He urged the former Anambra State governor to clarify the situation accurately.

However, Ganduje described Obi’s assertions as regrettable and deceptive.

In a personally signed statement, the APC Chairman asserted that Obi’s assertions were pure mischief and complete falsehoods. These claims would have been disregarded if not for the necessity to counteract such an unfounded narrative.

Ganduje stated that Mr. Obi’s false allegations about Morka threatening his life have severely defamed Morka and provoked online supporters to make death threats against him and his family.

He stressed that Obi, as a public figure, has a duty to deliver accurate and truthful information. Additionally, he noted that spreading falsehoods undermines public trust.

The National Chairman of the APC highlighted that Morka was merely fulfilling his role as the party’s National Publicity Secretary by holding opposition figures responsible for their statements, which is a standard practice in a democratic environment.

He stated: “Morka’s remarks in the interview were solely a response to a question about ‘prophets of doom’ and ‘voodoo economics.’ His statement did not imply or suggest any threat to Obi or anyone else.”

Ganduje reiterated the significance of free speech, highlighting it as a “right protected by Nigeria’s Constitution.” He stressed that this right is equally applicable to all Nigerians, including those in the ruling party.

He urged Obi to avoid spreading misinformation and to embrace criticism as a fundamental aspect of the democratic process.

Ganduje questioned whether Mr. Obi expects the APC to remain passive and let the opposition spread falsehoods without responding.

He cautioned that the APC would persist in addressing unfounded claims with facts about the Tinubu administration.
