LG Crisis: Chaos in Osun as Sacked Irewole Chairman, Two Others Shot Dead by Thugs

Tensions erupt in Osun State as the sacked Irewole Local Government chairman and two others are shot dead by suspected thugs amid the ongoing LG crisis.

Remi Abass, the dismissed chairman of Irewole Local Government in Osun State, was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen at the local government secretariat in Ikire.

According to eyewitnesses, the assailants charged into the secretariat in broad daylight on Monday and fired numerous gunshots.

“It was unexpected and chaotic, with people scrambling for safety,” said a local resident who wished to remain anonymous.

The Osun State Police Command has verified the incident and announced that investigations are underway. “Our efforts to capture those responsible and reestablish peace in the area are ongoing,” stated SP Yemisi Opalola, the Police Public Relations Officer.

Abass was one of the local government chairmen elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC) who were dismissed by a ruling from the Federal High Court in Osogbo in November 2022.

In the meantime, two individuals have been confirmed dead in Boripe LGA of the state due to a conflict that broke out when some alleged hoodlums associated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) tried to seize control of the council.

Eyewitnesses reported that individuals identified as Ege and Igara were fatally shot by hoodlums.

It was reported that Ege, who recently switched allegiance from the APC to the PDP, was his parents’ only son. His father is also mentioned as being a member of the PDP.

Another individual, identified as Yinka and known to be a photographer, was also shot and is presently in critical condition at an undisclosed hospital, according to reliable sources.

The situation has incited panic in the area, prompting residents to scramble for safety.
