Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with his French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot in Beirut on Monday and called for a ceasefire in the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. According to a statement from his office, Mikati said, “The key to a solution is to stop Israeli aggression against Lebanon and renew the US and French appeal for a ceasefire.

” The Barrot arrived in Beirut on Sunday, becoming the first diplomat to visit Lebanon since Israel expanded its attacks on Hezbollah positions. Mikati added that “the priority is to apply UN Security Council Resolution 1701,” which ended the war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006. The French envoy’s visit came as a deadly attack hit a building in the center of the Lebanese capital.
