Lawyers Criticize Nnamdi Kanu for Silencing His Legal Counsel

Legal experts have called out IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu for reportedly shutting down his counsel during court proceedings, raising concerns over his legal strategy and representation.
Nigerian lawyers have responded to a contentious event involving Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra, and his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor. They discussed how they would handle a situation if a client yelled at them in the same manner that Kanu did towards his counsel.
In a viral video from the courtroom where Kanu faced terrorism charges, the IPOB leader was observed instructing his lawyer to remain silent while he spoke.
Kanu banged on the table and shouted at the lawyer, “Stop talking when I’m speaking!”
The IPOB leader maintained that Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja should not oversee his case, referencing her earlier decision to withdraw.
In individual interviews with various legal practitioners, they emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism even when confronted with physical aggression. They further added that it is crucial to uphold boundaries of respect and safety at all times.
Isiaka Olagunju, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, remarked that it was disrespectful for Kanu to speak poorly of his lawyer.
When asked if he would handle the situation differently, Olagunju replied, “Until that time.”
He stated that it is essential for all lawyers to uphold the dignity, integrity, sanctity, and respect of the profession without allowing anyone to diminish them.
The conduct in question is based on the personal opinions of these lawyers. The lawyer’s demeanor exemplifies how a professional should act, maintaining a very calm composure.
Expressing his views, legal practitioner Abdulkareem Riliwan stated that he would promptly inquire about the meaning behind the statement.
Riliwan mentioned that he would have challenged the statements made by the detained IPOB leader.
He mentioned that Kanu would have composed an apology letter to the public, imploring him.
The attorney stated, “I never compromise on standards as a lawyer. It’s truly unfortunate, but I cannot be in that situation because I refuse to tolerate any nonsense.”
The statement is absurd, and it seems the lawyer has mocked Kanu. However, some lawyers end up making fools of themselves in pursuit of financial gain.
Ayo Ademiluyi, another legal professional, criticized Kanu’s outburst by describing it as “a tyrannical attitude.”
He noted that the lawyer likely remained silent due to the nature of Kanu as a client.
Ademiluyi remarked, “If Nnamdi Kanu were just a regular client, would the lawyer tolerate such behavior? However, since he is wealthy, it turns into an economic matter.”
