Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced on Sunday, July 14, that the government plans to plant approximately 20,000 trees within the next 12 months to combat climate change and work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The governor made this declaration during the celebration of the 2024 Tree Planting Day at the State House in Marina.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted the significance of this initiative in safeguarding the earth and addressing climate change, expressing the administration’s dedication to environmental protection and sustainability.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stressed the theme’s significance in ensuring the preservation of the environment for future generations.

Wahab pointed out that Lagos, known as ‘a city defined by water’, faces challenges such as annual flooding, sea level rise, and rapid population growth.

He highlighted issues like improper waste disposal, destruction of drainages, air and noise pollution, and poor sanitation habits as daily concerns for residents.
