Over the course of the past year, a staggering number of 840 event centers and social facilities in Lagos state have been forced to close their doors due to safety violations and non-compliance with existing laws.
The commissioner for special duties and intergovernmental relations, Gbenga Oyerinde, highlighted this during a ministerial press briefing held to commemorate Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s first year in his second term.
Oyerinde emphasized that the ministry is diligently working in accordance with the THEMES Plus agenda to mitigate risks and safeguard both life and property.
The Lagos State Safety Commission played a crucial role in this endeavor by conducting enforcement actions at 840 facilities, including event centers, clubs, lounges, hotels, and construction sites, all in an effort to address safety infractions.

Furthermore, a total of 7,819 facilities were inspected to ensure compliance with safety regulations, and an additional 5,220 were issued fire safety compliance certificates.
The commission also undertook 365 environmental safety advocacy initiatives.
The Fire and Rescue Service, on the other hand, successfully rescued 376 victims during the review period, preserving property worth N152.22 billion.
Unfortunately, there were 82 casualties and N25.37 billion in property lost.
In order to bolster infrastructure, the government is nearing completion of three new fire stations in Ijegun-Egba, Satellite Town, and Ijede, while also finalizing an ultramodern workshop at the Alausa headquarters to cater to the agency’s fleet maintenance needs.
Additionally, land spaces have been identified for the development of additional fire stations in Ibeju, Lekki, and Ifako Ijaiye.
The Fire and Rescue Service remains committed to enhancing fire mitigation and emergency response strategies, aligning with the THEMES Plus Agenda.
