Lagos State collaborates with a leading Chinese company to implement a 50 MW solar power project, benefiting LASU and other educational institutions, enhancing sustainable energy infrastructure.

A Chinese company has partnered with the Lagos State Government through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to install solar power systems in crucial educational facilities.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu revealed the agreement through a statement during the Africa-China Cooperation Summit (#FOCAC2024) taking place in Beijing. The Nigerian delegation, led by President Bola Tinubu on a state visit to China, is currently participating in this summit.

The Governor has announced that the purpose of this project is to produce roughly 50 megawatts (MW) of cleaner and more cost-effective electricity. This will be accomplished through the installation of solar power systems at three institutions: Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Lagos State University Education, and Lagos State College Medicine.

According to him, the project aims to decrease the institutions’ dependence on electricity from grids and fossil fuels, which in turn will aid environmental sustainability measures.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who put his signature on the MoU document, highlighted that this initiative reflects Lagos State’s dedication to integrating eco-friendly energy solutions as a fundamental aspect of its economic growth plan.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was present during the signing of the agreement, reiterated sentiments similar to those conveyed by the governor. He emphasized how crucial such partnerships are in propelling Nigeria’s shift towards sustainable energy practices.

He noted that the progress is in line with Lagos State’s larger goal of taking the lead in embracing renewable energy technologies within Nigeria, reinforcing its power sustainability while reducing its carbon emissions.
