The Lagos State government has ordered the demolition of a police barracks after structural assessments revealed an imminent risk of collapse. Learn more about the safety concerns and next steps.
An alert has been issued by the Lagos State Government regarding a forthcoming collapse of a building located at Onigbongbo in the Ikeja vicinity of Mopol 20 Barracks.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency is poised to commence an emergency evacuation and demolition of the Old Block 3 section of the barracks.
According to a statement released by Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA on Wednesday, an evaluation conducted by their response team has identified certain areas of the building as unstable.
The head of LASEMA declared that the edifice and its surrounding establishments would be emptied promptly to avert any harm or damage.
Following dispatch, the agency’s response team arrived at the location and determined that both the building in question and nearby structures necessitate immediate evacuation. To address this situation, we have implemented a comprehensive response plan involving evaluation procedures, as well as safe and organized evacuations followed by controlled demolition measures.
The statement partially stated that we will conduct this preventive demolition action because of the dangerous state of the building and potential secondary events that could happen if left unattended, as supervised by Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
Oke-Osanyintolu requested individuals in the surrounding area to stay composed and avoid spreading false information on social media.
The public was also reassured by him that the situation is being managed and monitored closely.
