The Lagos State Government plans to serve evacuation notices to residents of shanties around Kuramo waters, aiming to address safety and environmental concerns.

On Wednesday, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources announced that eviction notices would be issued to shanties around Kuramo waters as a measure to address flash flooding in the state.

The Commissioner of the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, shared this information during a conversation with journalists following an inspection tour of various drainage systems and projects in the Eti Osa Local Government Area alongside his team.

Wahab, who headed a team that visited the Kuramo waters, expressed dissatisfaction with the community because of the shanties in the area, describing them as a major concern.

“Kuramo Waters holds strategic importance for Victoria Island, and we’ve discussed with the contractors working on the coastal road that they need to ensure the outlet discharges into the Atlantic Ocean in its original manner.”

Our purpose here is to verify the situation and request that squatters be issued notices to vacate, allowing us to restore order in this neighborhood. The expanding community of shanties around the Kuramo waters poses significant security and environmental challenges. Many residents are unaccounted for, creating further complications. While we welcome people coming to Lagos, it’s essential they register their presence so that appropriate planning can include necessary schools, health facilities, and other infrastructure.

“This isn’t reassuring for us. We’ll issue the notices and then allow them to relocate, enabling us to assume ownership of this place and ensure our own safety,” he stated.

He explained that the inspection tour was a routine check-up, beginning at Orchid Road in Lekki.
