In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court has upheld the election of Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the Governor of Lagos State.
The lead judgment, delivered by Justice Garba Lawal, dismissed the appeal made by the Labour Party candidate, Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour. Sanwo-Olu had previously requested the Supreme Court to dismiss the appeals against his victory in the governorship election held on February 25. Rhodes-Vivour, along with the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Abdulazeez Adediran, had contested Sanwo-Olu’s victory.
The Labour Party argued that the election was marred by irregularities and non-compliance with the Electoral Act, and also questioned the eligibility of Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat to participate in the election. Adediran, on the other hand, filed 34 grounds of appeal, seeking to overturn the verdict of the Lagos State Governorship Election Tribunal and the Court of Appeal. However, Sanwo-Olu’s counsel, Nas Ogunsakin, argued that the applicants failed to provide evidence to support their claims and that the witnesses they presented were incompetent.
