Lagos Assembly Crisis: Meranda Calls Obasa’s Actions ‘A Show of Shame’

Mojisola Meranda, the current Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has criticized her predecessor Mudashiru Obasa for appearing at the Assembly on Thursday and asserting that he remains the speaker.

She addressed journalists on Friday at the Lagos State High Court, where Obasa had submitted an application contesting his removal.

“In my opinion, what Obasa did at the Assembly was just an embarrassing display,” she remarked. “In our job, we rely on having a quorum with enough members present. Sitting with only three or four members is merely putting on a theatrical performance.”

The crisis within the Lagos State Assembly escalated on Thursday as Obasa, representing Agege 1 Constituency, returned to the Assembly Complex weeks after his colleagues had elected Meranda Mojisola as his replacement.

Accompanied by a group of stern-faced, armed security operatives in uniform, the ousted speaker entered the hallowed chambers where he had not been seen publicly since his removal on Monday, January 13, 2025.

Mojisola Meranda, who was Obasa’s deputy at the time, was promptly elected as the new Speaker, making her the first woman to lead the legislative body in this South-Western state.

However, Obasao said that his removal never adhered to the principles and constitution of the House.

“I have consistently stated that I have never been removed from office, and I’m not opposed to any removal,” Obasa remarked hours after his return to the Lagos State Assembly complex amid controversy over his role as speaker.

“If you plan to proceed, it’s essential to adhere to the House’s rules. Impeachment and removal are constitutional actions that must align with its directives.”
