Ladipo Market in Mushin has been ordered to close immediately by the Lagos State Government due to suspected environmental violations, including careless trash disposal, unsanitary conditions, and unpaid garbage bills, among others.

Tokunbo Wahab, the commissioner for the environment and water resources, announced the closure order on Friday.

As part of ongoing efforts to inculcate compliance in marketplaces around the state, Wahab stated that the market would remain closed until the statutory conditions of redress were satisfied by traders and market partners.

In addition, the commissioner emphasised the crucial significance of market environmental hygiene, noting that “it is imperative that markets in the state adhere strictly to environmental laws and regulations for the well-being of residents.”

The closure of Ladipo market, according to Wahab, “serves as a stern reminder that no entity, regardless of its size or influence, is above the law, assuring that the state government was fully committed to collaborating with market stakeholders, to facilitate the necessary adjustments and improvements to enable them to meet required environmental standards.”

Ladipo Market, a well-known centre for automobile components and related services, has been a focus of environmental worries because of many actions that go against the rules. The engagement of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, or LAWMA, is a critical step in resolving these problems and bringing the market into conformity.

Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the managing director of LAWMA, responded to the decision by saying that it was anticipated that the closure would allow for a full evaluation of the market’s activities’ effects on the environment and the execution of necessary corrective measures.

He said the closure would send a strong message that LAWMA would not hold back from taking serious measures when environmental regulations were broken.
