Labour demands Imo’s power supply and flight cancellations immediately.

In Imo State, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have issued orders to immediately stop air travel and power supply.

The two unions’ leaderships came to the accord after an extraordinary meeting of the National Executive Council on Tuesday in Abuja.

The TUC President, Festus Osifo, and the NLC Deputy President, Adewale Adeyanju, co-signed a communiqué following the meeting announcing a complete statewide strike that will take effect on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.

Labour charged that the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma had violated several laws, including those pertaining to the national minimum wage, the use of violence and thuggery against trade union leaders, the refusal to carry out prior agreements, unpaid salary arrears, vandalism of the NLC state secretariat, and the implementation of discriminatory pay.

The NLC/TUC NEC-in-Session therefore decided as follows:

“To direct the immediate suspension of operations and the closure of Imo State as of this evening at midnight. It is expected of all employees and affiliates to guarantee compliance from their current location. As soon as possible, all aircraft entering and leaving the state of Imo, as well as fuel and electricity supply, should be halted. All employees, both public and private, must put down their tools immediately and permanently.

“That workers throughout the federation will unite in withdrawing their services by midnight on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, if our demands remain unfulfilled.”

“By virtue of this resolution, all State Councils of NLC & TUC and affiliates are required to ensure full conformity with NEC’s decision.”
