Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has alleged interference by President Bola Tinubu and Lagos-based political interests in Kano’s political matters. Kwankwaso criticized what he described as undue influence aimed at destabilizing the state’s governance and political autonomy.
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and the 2023 presidential candidate for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has expressed concerns about what he perceives as a bias by Tinubu’s government in favoring Lagos State over other states within the federation.
Kwankwaso claimed that Lagos is trying to exert dominance over other regions in the country, especially Kano, due to the substantial support it receives from the central government.
Kwankwaso claimed that Lagos is interfering in Kano’s domestic affairs, particularly regarding the selection of its emir.
He stated these claims during a speech at Skyline University’s convocation ceremony in Kano on Sunday.
He stated, “It is quite evident today that significant efforts are being made from the Lagos area to exert control over this region. They wish to impose their own Emir on Kano instead of allowing us to select our own.”
Kwankwaso, focusing primarily on President Tinubu, added: “Lagos seems to view itself as representing all of Nigeria and meddles in the affairs of other states. We will not accept such interference here in Kano.”
Kwankwaso’s remarks highlighted deeper worries regarding the perceived regional imbalance in governance and traditional institutions, especially under President Bola Tinubu’s current administration.
Many people think that President Tinubu’s administration has focused more on Lagos State, awarding projects worth trillions of naira there, potentially at the expense of other states.
