According to Bishop Matthew Hassan-Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, it is not permissible to coerce contenders into signing a peace agreement prior to the 2024 gubernatorial race in Edo.
According to OBASANJONEWS, the National Peace Committee led by former Nigerian Head of State General Abdulsalam Abubakar oversaw the signing of a peace accord aimed at deterring electoral violence during elections.
The pre-election peace accord, an electoral ritual in the past decade, was ignored by The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

While discussing the progress made on Sunday at the Edo Election Security Townhall program in Benin City, Bishop Kukah – a convener of the National Peace Committee – stated that they cannot compel any candidate to sign.
Kukah pointed out that the PDP’s refusal to sign the peace accord sends a negative message, but he also disclosed that Bola Tinubu declined to sign it during his presidential candidacy.
The actions of the National Peace Committee are not governed by a legal statute such as the Electoral Act; rather, they stem from a moral obligation. It is impossible to force individuals to have affection towards their fellow humans.
During the 2015 election, Atiku Abubakar – who was then running as Presidential Candidate for the PDP – failed to sign up for the Peace Accord. This provoked strong reactions from opponents and members of civil society, in keeping with what can be expected; However, he eventually showed up on signing day to add his signature.
It is noteworthy that the present president did not endorse it during his presidential campaign. The fact that the political opposition failed to seize this opportunity was beyond our control.
