Yahaya Bello, the governor of Kogi State, was not attacked on Sunday, according to the Defence Headquarters.

On his journey from Lokoja, the state capital, to an official engagement a few kilometres outside Abuja, Bello said there had been an attempt on his life.

Kingsley Fanwo, the state’s information commissioner, said in a statement that the attackers, who were wearing military uniforms, got in the middle of the governor’s motorcade and began firing intermittently at his car and the other vehicles there.

However, some people misinterpreted the remark and reported that the governor was attacked by unnamed soldiers.

In a conversation with our correspondent, Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, Director, Defence Information, Defence Headquarters, refuted the claim and said Bello’s assailants were thieves wearing false military uniforms.

Gusau encouraged the police to look into the situation and make sure that those responsible were held accountable.

“The attack is unfortunate, and we are not pleased with what happened,” he declared. The governor did not, however, claim that the soldiers had attacked him. The governor will never come under attack from the military. He claimed that his assailants were dressed in uniforms. Criminals are attacking him. We requested the police to look into the situation and determine what happened and who was responsible for the attack.
