Kogi Assembly Demands Immediate Dismissal of EFCC Chair, Olukoyede
The Kogi State Assembly has issued a call for the immediate removal of EFCC Chair, Olukoyede, citing concerns over his conduct. Discover the latest updates on this unfolding political situation.
The Kogi State House of Assembly has demanded the immediate dismissal of Ola Olukoyede, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Earlier this year, the Assembly requested that the EFCC rescind the ‘wanted’ designation it had placed on former Governor Yahaya Bello.
During a plenary session held in Lokoja, the state capital, on Monday, the legislators criticized Olukoyede for his “unprofessional” management of the case involving Bello.
They also condemned what they characterized as an assault by EFCC operatives on the Kogi State Government Lodge, asserting that this act was an affront to Governor Usman Ododo and the people of Kogi State.
The lawmakers accused the EFCC of attempting to assassinate both the former and current governors, emphasizing that the ongoing persecution of the former governor must cease.
This resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance introduced by Hon. Akus Lawal, representing the Ankpa 1 State Constituency, and was seconded by Hon. Jacob Olawunmi of the Mopamuro State Constituency.
Hon. Akus asserted that the EFCC aimed to humiliate and potentially harm both the current and former governors, a sentiment echoed by other members of the Assembly.
Hon. Olawunmi, in his support of the motion, highlighted that the State Government has consistently published its Audited Financial Reports, contending that “the State House of Assembly can unequivocally state that no funds are missing to justify the EFCC’s baseless persecution of the former Governor.”
Hon. Abu Jibril from Ajaokuta State specifically called for the prosecution of the EFCC chairman for allegedly attempting to harm the governor, urging the president to take immediate action for his removal.
He remarked that the EFCC’s actions indicate that the chairman is unfit to lead an agency that is expected to operate impartially.
“The Chairman has demonstrated a level of incompetence that necessitates his dismissal,” he stated.
Honorable Bode Ogunmola, representing the Ogori/Magongo State Constituency (PDP), stated, “Should I find myself in London during a crisis, I would feel secure upon reaching the Nigerian House. Similarly, if I were in Abuja amidst turmoil, I would trust that the Kogi Lodge would provide me with safety. The directive from the EFCC Chairman to open fire on the official residence of the Governor is unacceptable; he must be dismissed and held accountable. It is imperative that we understand the motives behind his actions against our Governor.”
