A vigilante commander was killed by kidnappers during a rescue mission to free abducted victims in Kwara. Read more about the tragic incident.
Mr. Lukman Balogun, a vigilante commander and Jagun of Igbayaland, tragically died during a rescue operation in Igbaja community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
His death sparked massive protests by youths in the affected areas who mourned the loss of a local hero known for his tireless fight against banditry.
Mr. Balogun was shot dead on Monday night by kidnappers who had invaded the area the previous day and abducted three women.
Two more people were reportedly abducted from Kajola village in the early hours of Tuesday, further adding to the pain in the community. The youths who took to the streets in protest suspect itinerant herders to be behind the brutal crime.
The Coordinator of Kwara South Elders Safety Forum, Olaitan Oyin Zubairu, confirmed that Balogun died in a gun battle between his men and the kidnappers.
“A joint team of police, military and vigilantes are currently searching for the abductees in the forests around Igbaja and Oke-Ode,” he said.

Sources revealed that Balogun was part of a team that pursued the kidnappers following the kidnapping of prominent residents in the city. He died during an operation along Ogere-Yaalu road.
The Elese of Igbayaland, Oba Ahmed Babalola Arepo III, acknowledged that Balogun’s death was a grave loss to the community and called on protesters to remain calm.
He assured the youths that the perpetrators would be brought to justice. Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Femi Yusuf, echoed the sentiments of the King, expressed condolences and vowed to make every effort to locate those responsible for the crime.
Spokesman of the Kwara State Police Command, Toon Ejire Adeyem, described the incident as “unfortunate” and confirmed that police officers are actively pursuing the kidnappers.
The tragic death of Mr Lukman Balogun has left Igbaja community in mourning as they continue to battle the growing security situation and banditry.
His courage and commitment to protecting his people will not be forgotten and his death has further heightened calls for stronger security measures in the area.
