Kidnapped Borno judge Haruna Mshelia has regained his freedom, days after being taken captive by unknown gunmen in a shocking abduction.
High Court judge Justice Haruna Mshelia, who was abducted in June 2024 in Borno State, has been freed by his kidnappers.
On June 24, while on a trip from Biu to Maiduguri with his wife, driver and police orderly, the judge was abducted by individuals believed to be associated with Boko Haram.
Sadly, the attack that took place between Buratai and Gujba village resulted in the death of his police orderly.
On Saturday, it was confirmed that Mr. Mshelia had been released and this information was first announced on a WhatsApp group for Borno lawyers.

The gratitude was expressed for his release, but it was indicated that his wife and driver are still in captivity. A subsequent message urged prayers to be continued for their safe return.
Police haven’t provided any further details on the incident, and it is uncertain whether a ransom was paid or other conditions were met for his release.
Before becoming a High Court judge in Borno since May 2012, Mr. Mshelia practiced law privately.
The ongoing security struggles in Borno State are underscored by his kidnapping, which serves as a poignant reminder of the continued violent onslaughts executed by Boko Haram.
Thousands have lost their lives and many more have been displaced due to the havoc wreaked by the terrorist group in the region.
