Kenyan, Ethiopian Runners Dominate 2025 Lagos City Marathon

Athletes from Kenya and Ethiopia showcased their endurance and speed at the 2025 Lagos City Marathon, claiming top spots in the prestigious long-distance race.
Once more, East African runners showcased their superior skills at the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon by securing first place in both the men’s and women’s categories.
Kenya’s Edwin Kibet triumphed in the men’s race on Saturday, crossing the finish line with a time of 2:14:06 to win the $50,000 prize. Previously victorious in this marathon in 2023, Kibet improved upon his third-place result from last year when he was outpaced by fellow Kenyans Bernard Sang and Alex Cheprot.
In the women’s category, Guta Meseret Hirpa from Ethiopia claimed victory by finishing with a time of 2:37:04, marking her first-ever win in the competition.
Nigerian athlete Nyango Gyang Boyi achieved a historic milestone by finishing among the top 10, taking eighth place with a time of 2:25:41.58. His impressive performance garnered him a $4,000 prize, and as the first Nigerian to cross the finish line in his category, he also claimed an N2 million award for being leading local competitor.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu participated in the marathon alongside thousands of runners vying for top honors, successfully completing the race.
The 42km course started at Western Avenue near the National Stadium in Surulere and ended at Eko Atlantic City on Victoria Island. This annual event, which achieved World Athletics Gold Label status in 2023, continues to increase its prominence and draw elite athletes from around the world.
