A Kenyan court has permitted prosecutors to drop their $60 million fraud investigation against the nation’s newly elected deputy president.
On Thursday, Anti-Corruption Court Magistrate Victor Wakumile granted the plea to drop the corruption prosecution against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, citing inadequate evidence.
With nine other persons and businesses, Gachagua was charged with corruption in July of last year and released after posting a cash bond of almost $100,000. He has said he did nothing wrong.
Kenya’s Director of Public Prosecutions Nordin Haji requested the court’s permission earlier this month to enable the corruption allegations against the recently elected deputy president to be dropped.
However, should investigators uncover proof, the court has cautioned the accused that they may be detained again in the future on the same allegations.
Since President William Ruto was elected and a new government was established in Kenya, prosecutors withdrew several charges targeting associates of Ruto.
