A dam breach in Kenya, triggered by heavy rains and flooding, has resulted in the tragic loss of over 42 lives, according to Susan Kihika, the governor of Nakuru County, as reported by the news agency AFP. The dam that burst was situated near Mai Mahiu town in Nakuru County, leading to the destruction of homes and blockage of roads in the area.
Kihika mentioned that the death toll of 42 is a conservative estimate, indicating that there may be more casualties trapped in the mud. Efforts are underway to recover and identify the victims of this devastating incident.
Isaac Maigua Mwaura, a government spokesperson, highlighted that this catastrophe occurred amidst widespread flooding in Kenya, which has already claimed the lives of at least 103 individuals and displaced numerous others since March. The region has been experiencing heavy rainfall due to the El Nino phenomenon, intensifying the seasonal downpours in East Africa.
The El Nino weather pattern, a natural occurrence, has been causing continuous heavy rains in East Africa recently. This phenomenon typically leads to increased rainfall levels in the region, contributing to the ongoing challenges faced by communities in the area.
