Katsina Protests: Demonstrators Wave Russian Flags

Fresh protests have ignited in Katsina, as young people took to the streets and waved Russian flags after a period of relative tranquility for three days.

Organizers have announced that the #EndBadGovernance protests, which began on August 1st, will persist up until August 10th and include demonstrations.

President Bola Tinubu made a public address on Sunday, urging the protesters to stop their actions and instead engage in dialogue with the government.

He stressed that working together towards progress and unity is crucial for building a brighter future not only for ourselves but also generations to come.

Emphasizing that shutting out the oxygen of an economy recovering would be unwise, he urged everyone to choose hope over fear, unity over division, and progress over stagnation.

He warned against promoting any unconstitutional agenda which might threaten democracy after enjoying 25 years of democratic governance already had gained by Nigeria so far: “Forward ever; backward never!”

Although he made an appeal against it, the display of Russian flags has been increasingly adopted at protest locations since his speech.

There is evidence connecting Russia, which is presently in conflict with Western nations, to recent coups that took place in West African countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

Protesters in Katsina brandishing Russian flags raised their voices on Monday morning, chanting “Hunger is taking our lives” in Hausa.

The police have reacted by tracking the demonstrators and using tear gas to scatter them.
