Bandits in Katsina state have killed respected Islamic cleric Malam Aminu after paying a ransom.

According to journalist Bakatsin Dan Katsina, the cleric was kidnapped from his home in Dugun Muazu town in Sabuwa local government area a few weeks ago.

Malam Aminu, who served as the Naibi (deputy imam) of the main Jumaat mosque in the city, was reportedly bludgeoned to death by his captors even though the ransom demands were met.

Residents said the bandits initially demanded cash but the family quickly provided it. They then demanded his mobile phone, which they also delivered.

Despite these demands being met, on Sunday, September 29, 2024, the family received the shocking news that Malam Aminu had been killed in captivity.

“It is heartbreaking that his life was taken in such a brutal manner, especially when he had done nothing but pray for protection from the violence that plagues our community,” the resident said.

The pastor’s murder has caused great outrage among the public. Many believe his life ended prematurely due to his role in spearheading prayers against the growing wave of terrorism in the area.

“It seems his only crime was praying for peace and protection. His murder is not just an attack on him, it’s an attack on our community and our faith,” another resident said.
