JUST IN: Kano Violence: Multiple Deaths as Protesters Clash with Security Forces

Multiple fatalities and injuries were reported in Kano following a violent confrontation between security forces and protestors.
Some of the areas most impacted are Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna, Bachirawa, Kofar Nassarawa and Unguwa Uku.
According to witnesses, the conflict started when a group of young people defied the curfew imposed by the state and continued protesting on the streets.
This nationwide protest has recently escalated violence in that area. Abdulkadir Musa, a resident from there said that during this clash at Rijiyar Lemo village, eight individuals including women and children were shot.

Unfortunately, an elderly lady along with three others have been confirmed dead while several more are injured as well.
The situation worsened as demonstrators, purportedly capitalizing on the hunger strikes to camouflage their actions, made an effort to rob several establishments such as a yogurt store.
Law enforcement officers intervened which escalated the conflict resulting in more chaos. According unconfirmed accounts, a Divisional Police Officer sustained injuries during the altercation.
Salamatu Hospital is presently attending to the shooting victims. On social media, an overwhelming expression of sorrow for the deaths and dissatisfaction with law enforcement’s reaction has emerged.
Aiha K Nass posted about her brother’s passing, while Omar Khalid Saleh denounced how police managed the demonstrations by fueling tensions.
To manage the situation, particularly in Kurna Asabe near Bukavu Army Barracks, security forces have established checkpoints and mobilized police units.
We were unable to reach out to Abudullahi Haruna Kiyawa, a spokesperson for the police department despite attempts made for comments.
