A Kano resident has lost a property valued at N20 million due to an unpaid debt of N300,000, raising concerns about debt enforcement and legal battles in Nigeria.

The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been urged to step in regarding the situation involving Malam Surajo Yarima. His house, estimated to be worth around N20 million, was allegedly auctioned off by a court for only N2 million.

In an interview with Hikima Radio/TV, Yarima claimed that his property was sold at auction to repay a debt of N300,000.

He clarified that because he was out of the state, he missed court hearings even though he received multiple summons notices.

Consequently, the court auctioned his house, leading to the eviction of him, his wife, and their nine children. Yarima asserted that he had repaid the N300,000 debt; however, the creditor declined to accept it. Nonetheless, the court indicated that Yarima could appeal the decision within three weeks of its issuance.

He stated, “The house was auctioned on January 4th, and I gathered the N300,000 by January 6th. However, my creditor refused to take it. Now my family and I are sleeping outside.”
