Insight into the recent presence of Russian flags among #EndBadGovernance protesters across Northern Nigeria has been provided by Salihu Tanko Yakasai, an aide to Abdullahi Ganduje – national chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC).

Public unrest ignited on August 1st due to increased food prices and economic adversity in Nigeria, driving the current protests.

The presence of Russian flags among protestors from the North has raised concerns amongst government officials as well as military leaders.

In his article on X, Yakasai expounded that Northern protestors utilize the Russian flag as a strategic ploy to garner attention from the federal government.

He highlighted how numerous individuals in North have been tracking developments in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger via BBC Hausa and DW.

According to Yakasai, the average person from northern regions is knowledgeable due to being exposed to news through outlets such as BBC Hausa and DW.

They are hoping that displaying their flag will grab the attention of the Federal Government; however, there’s a concern it may attract unwanted external forces who could exploit this situation.

The Nigerian Military has promised to hold accountable the individuals who were responsible for displaying the flags as a reaction.

Furthermore, in an announcement made on Monday, the Russian Embassy stated that the demonstration of protestor using their national flag does not represent any endorsement or viewpoint from Russia’s official government policy.
