Kano Govt Allocates N2.5bn for Mass Weddings, N1bn for Ramadan Feeding

The Kano State government announces plans to spend N2.5 billion on mass weddings and N1 billion on Ramadan feeding, sparking public reactions.

The government of Kano State has allocated N2.5 billion to finance mass weddings on a quarterly basis in all 44 local government areas throughout the year 2025.

Musa Shanono, the Commissioner for Planning and Budget, disclosed this information at a press briefing regarding the details of the 2025 budget that was recently enacted by the State House of Assembly.

Shanono stated that the government has allocated N91.32 billion towards governance and service delivery initiatives, which encompass the mass wedding program. He clarified that this initiative is designed to encourage social responsibility, transparency, and human rights while promoting a just and sustainable society to improve the quality of life for residents of Kano.

Furthermore, N1 billion has been designated for Ramadan feeding. Meanwhile, N955 million is earmarked for a manpower statistics survey, a general household survey, and data collection on out-of-school children. An additional N1.049 billion will go towards purchasing printing machines, rehabilitating the water system, and acquiring library equipment for the Government Printing Press.

Shanono elaborated that N267.6 million has been allocated for infrastructure enhancements, the creation of an Islamic calendar, and support for Islamic Da’wah initiatives along with welfare packages for new converts to Islam.

Additional allocations comprise N589 million for security research and empowerment programs, along with initiatives to tackle street begging. In addition, N200 million is earmarked for the procurement of office furniture, maintenance of the accountant-general’s office, and development of financial management software.

The approved budget for 2025 is N719.75 billion, which represents a 31% increase from the initial proposal of N549.16 billion presented by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. Shanono highlighted that recurrent expenditures total N262.67 billion and capital expenditures are set at N457.08 billion—a combined rise of 65% compared to the budget for 2024.
