The Kano Government has initiated steps to resolve the crisis affecting the Yoruba community, aiming to restore peace and address underlying issues.
A Reconciliation Committee has been established by the Kano State Government in order to address the current unrest within the Yoruba community residing in said state.
On Thursday, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Abdullahi Bichi, inaugurated the committee on behalf of Governor Abba Yusuf.
We have chosen you, esteemed individuals, to serve on this committee because of your individual leadership abilities. Our goal is to bring about resolution between the Oba’s group and Aare group in a tactful manner.
Furthermore, the Yoruba Community’s significance in Kano makes it a matter of worry for the state government.
It is the desire of His Excellency that you employ your vast experience and knowledge to bring a resolution to the ongoing conflict in the community.
Bichi stated, “I hereby inaugurate this committee in the name of Allah and on behalf of His Excellency Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.”

As specified by the SSG, certain parameters encompassed in the committee’s remit involve extending an invitation to both disputing factions within the local populace with intent on resolving the ongoing turmoil.
The committee of eleven is required to extend invitations to pertinent associations, interest groups, and Kano residents for written or verbal statements on the crisis at hand.
All organizations or institutions, including the Kano Emirate Council, will also be invited to engage in dialogue due to allegations of impropriety regarding certain council appointments.
It is the responsibility of the body to investigate both internal and external parties involved in the crisis, determining their respective roles as well as identifying immediate and remote causes.
The committee is responsible for providing solutions and recommendations, along with submitting its report to the state government within four weeks after being inaugurated.
The committee comprises academics, with Professor Usman Muhammad serving as Chairman and Dr. Ransom Bello as Co-Chairman.
The group consists of Prof. Afolabi Falola, Prof. Ibrahim Khalil, Prof. Akindele Mukaddas, Prof. Usman Malumfashi and Prof. Nuruddeen Salahuddeen along with a delegate from the Kano Emirate Council as their member counterpart.
In addition, the Aare Musulumi of Yorubas in Kano has advised young people to prioritize dialogue instead of protests.
The committee’s chairman, Prof. Usman, pledged to utilize effective conflict resolution strategies to uncover the underlying causes of the turmoil “with responsibility and dedication,” in his reply.
Dr. Ransom Bello, the co-chairman, expressed his gratitude towards the state government for selecting them and assured to fulfill their obligation with dedication.
Abdussalam Abiola, the Special Adviser to the Governor of the State for Yoruba Affairs and Inter-community Relations, urged members of the Yoruba community to collaborate with the committee shortly after its inauguration. He implored them to make sacrifices so that peace could prevail.
