Flour dealers at Singer Market in Kano have slashed prices to help reduce the high cost of bread, offering relief to consumers.

The food merchants operating at Kano’s Kwanar Singer Market have reached a decision to provide flour to the Master Bakers Association of Nigeria in the state branch, regulatedly priced with an aim of lowering bread prices within their jurisdiction.

Mohammed Junaidu, the Chairman of the Singer Market Development Association, revealed this information following a meeting between members of his association and Muhuyi Magaji Rimin-Gado, Chairperson of the State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission.

Junaidu noted that members of the association agreed to sell flour to bakers at a reduced price of N65,000 per bag after intervention from the State Government’s anti-corruption commission. This is significantly lower than the exorbitant market rate of N82,000 per bag.

According to him, one shipment of flour had already been supplied by the flour dealers at a regulated price to the Bakers Association and he further mentioned that another truck loaded with the same commodity would be dispatched shortly for them.

According to him, the exorbitant price of flour in the state was caused by middlemen who made it nearly impossible for regular citizens to purchase.

According to the Chairman, flour dealers will persist in providing their product to bakers and other consumers of goods derived from it with the intention of lowering bread prices as well as costs associated with other food items dependent on flour.

Earlier, newsmen were told by Muhuyi Rimin-Gado, the Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission that their meeting with dealers was in compliance with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s directive to combat inflationary trends in the state.

According to Rimin-Gado, right after the curfew was lifted in response to the recent protests against bad governance within the state, there was an abrupt onset of artificial inflation.

According to him, the Commission is fully committed to strictly adhering to the agreement made with Kwanar Singer market traders in order to lower commodity prices and improve accessibility for residents of the state.

According to the Chairman, “The Commission is resolute in addressing the sustained price hikes within our state and identifying those responsible for such behavior. Our goal is to ensure that food items and other goods are accessible to all members of society.”
