Kano Assembly Ousts Five Emirs and Abolishes Emirate Councils
All five of the state’s emirate councils have been dissolved by the Kano State House of Assembly, which asserts that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is the only person qualified to name new emirs.
This was the result of discussions held at Thursday’s plenary on the house floor.
After passing second and third readings on Thursday morning, the Kano State Emirate Council Amendment Bill was discussed on the house floor.
The law’s repeal, according to Deputy Speaker Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu Butu, will restore Kano’s former splendour because the state’s ability and dignity were diminished when the Kano Emirate was divided into five.

Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Dala, the majority leader, claimed that the formation of new emirates had corrupted the culture that the emirate council was responsible for protecting.
Speaking to reporters, Dala clarified that the Commissioner for Local Governments will act as the watchdog and that all five emirate councils had been eliminated as a result of the legal amendment.
A motion to establish a new second class emirate council in the state was also approved by the parliament.
