Kaduna Gov Receives Repentant Bandits, Promises Rehabilitation
The Governor of Kaduna has met with repentant bandits and vowed to support their rehabilitation, as part of efforts to address insecurity in the region.
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has vowed that his administration will prioritize fairness and justice in its quest to promote lasting peace and development within the state.
On Thursday, during his visit to Birnin Gwari, the governor greeted the inaugural group of repentant bandits and formally reopened the local cattle market. This market had been closed for almost ten years due to security concerns.
Sani emphasized the efforts of the Peace Dialogue Group, a joint initiative involving collaboration between Kaduna State Government and federal agencies.
The governor stated that the group has been actively working with stakeholders through meetings and discussions to build trust and promote reconciliation.
Sani stated, “After numerous meetings and extensive discussions, we’ve established bridges of trust. Many senior bandit leaders have surrendered their weapons and chosen peace for themselves and their followers.”
He explained that individuals who have shown repentance are being enrolled in a rehabilitation program created in collaboration with the Federal Government.
“This program follows international standards for disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration to ensure that these individuals can rejoin society as productive citizens,” the governor added.

Sani highlighted that the rehabilitation process follows a “carrot and stick” approach, expressing, “We welcome those who choose peace; however, we will not hesitate to act decisively against anyone persisting in violence.”
He praised the security agencies for successfully neutralizing bandit leaders, dismantling criminal networks, and rescuing kidnapped victims.
The governor also introduced plans for a detailed “Kaduna Model” framework designed to ensure lasting peace and security.
He explained that the model incorporates disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration, as well as investments in rural development and conflict resolution. This holistic approach addresses both the symptoms and root causes of insecurity.
Sani highlighted the advancements achieved during his administration, emphasizing that insecurity and ethno-religious tensions have notably decreased.
“He stated that by employing strategic communication and inclusive governance, they have gained the trust and confidence of their people. Additionally, he noted that diverse communities now back the government’s peacebuilding initiatives.”
The governor emphasized that consistent security measures are essential for reviving the rural economy.
