President Bola Tinubu has honored Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), reinforcing diplomatic ties between Nigeria and India. The award highlights the commitment to mutual cooperation and global partnerships.
President Bola Tinubu has awarded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Nigeria’s second-highest national honor, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).
The announcement occurred during a bilateral meeting at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
President Tinubu highlighted that the award represents Nigeria’s appreciation for its partnership with India. “To express our gratitude to India as a partner of Nigeria,” stated the President.

Prime Minister Modi reached Abuja on Saturday evening and received an official welcome at the Villa’s forecourt Sunday morning, around 10:20 a.m. The ceremonial reception featured the playing of India’s national anthem, an inspection of the Guard of Honour, a 21-gun salute, and a performance by the Brigade of Guards featuring Nigeria’s national anthem.
Following the formalities, President Tinubu and Prime Minister Modi engaged in a private meeting. The leaders are anticipated to deliberate on and endorse several bilateral agreements designed to enhance relations between their countries.
A statement from the Presidency outlined the goals of the visit: “During their bilateral discussions, President Tinubu and Prime Minister Modi will work towards strengthening ties between Nigeria and India. The two leaders plan to exchange signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) aimed at boosting collaboration in key sectors.”
This visit is the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria since Dr. Manmohan Singh’s state trip in 2007, when a strategic partnership between the two nations was established.
