(JUST IN) Rivers Assembly Suspends Sittings Indefinitely Over Budget Crisis

The Rivers State House of Assembly has announced an indefinite suspension of its sittings amid the ongoing budget crisis. Read more on the latest legislative development.
The Rivers State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended its legislative sessions after a decision was made during Friday’s plenary, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule in Port Harcourt.
This development follows closely on the heels of Governor Siminalayi Fubara informing the Speaker about his intention to submit the 2025 Appropriation Bill for deliberation and approval.
In a letter dated March 13, Fubara informed Amaewhule of his intention to present the budget on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. Alternatively, he mentioned that another date within the month could be chosen based on the Assembly’s preference.
Fubara clarified that his request is consistent with a Supreme Court ruling and responds to lawmakers’ demands for him to resubmit the budget. He also mentioned an earlier effort to present the budget at the Assembly Quarters, where legislators were temporarily meeting, but he was refused entry into the complex.
