The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made an announcement regarding the suspension of ongoing rerun elections in specific constituencies in Akwa Ibom, Kano, and Enugu states.
This decision was made due to disruptions, irregularities, and the abduction of election officials.
The affected areas include Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency in Akwa Ibom State, where elections were suspended in two Polling Units due to the carting away of election materials by hoodlums. In Enugu State, elections were suspended in all eight Polling Units of Enugu South 1 State Constituency because the original results sheets were not available for inspection by voters. Similarly, in Kano State, elections were suspended in all ten Polling Units of Kunchi LGA due to invasion, vandalization, and disruption by thugs.
INEC had previously stated that it was monitoring reports of hijacking and thuggery in these states. decision to suspend the polls is in accordance with the provisions of section 24(3) of the Electoral Act 2022. Further measures for the affected constituencies will be announced after the Commission’s meeting on Monday.
