Kaduna Electric has laid off 900 employees in a major workforce reduction, citing operational challenges. The move sparks concerns over job security in the sector.

The Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (Kaduna Electric) has laid off 900 employees, leading to an indefinite strike by those impacted.

In a statement issued on January 31, 2025, the company announced that they no longer required the services of the affected staff.

Kaduna Electric promised the employees that their net benefits would be deposited into their accounts, and that pension entitlements would be processed “in due course.”

The mass layoff has ignited protests, as the terminated employees have launched an indefinite strike to voice their discontent.

According to a source within the company, “Kaduna Electric has terminated 900 employees and provided only 10% of their expected benefits. An indefinite strike has been declared.”

SaharaReporters discovered that the dismissal occurred during a Monthly Performance Review meeting led by Dr. Umar Abubakar Hashidu, the Managing Director and CEO of Kaduna Electric, along with Alhaji Aminu Abubakar Suleiman, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Also in attendance was Ibrahim Musa Umar, a board member and Chairman of the HR Committee.

Suleiman, who aspired to represent the Kogi East senatorial district under the Peoples Democratic Party, was disqualified by the party due to multiple instances of misconduct.

The company states that the workers’ net benefit will be credited to their account, while their pension will eventually be deposited into their retirement savings account with their Pension Fund Administrator (PFA).

The statement read, “We acknowledge your employment offer and are writing to inform you that your services will not be needed by the company after January 31, 2025.”

We did not make this decision lightly, as it underscores our dedication to adjusting our operations in response to present challenges.
