In a surprising move, four members of the House of Representatives elected under the Labour Party have officially left the party, raising questions about their political future.

Four House of Representatives members have switched from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House, announced on Thursday during a session in the green chamber that some lawmakers had defected.

The legislators are Chinedu Okere from the Owerri municipal/Owerri north/Owerri west federal constituency, Mathew Donatus representing the Kaura federal constituency of Kaduna, Akiba Bassey for the Calabar municipal/Odukpani federal constituency of Cross River, and Esosa Iyawe serving Oredo’s federal constituency in Edo.

The lawmakers claimed their defection was due to a purported crisis within the LP.

Abbas praised the legislators, stating they had made “the right decision.”

Erhriatake Ibori-Suenu, the representative for Ethiope federal constituency in Delta, has also switched from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the APC.

Ibori-Suenu is the daughter of James Ibori, who served as governor of Delta and is a prominent member of the PDP.

Ali Isa, the Minority Whip, and George Ozodinobi, the Deputy Minority Whip, voiced their opposition to the defections.

Ozodinobi, a prominent figure in the LP, stated that his colleagues lacked an ideology.

“When individuals join a political party that lacks ideology, it leads to this degree of defection,” he stated.

Ozodinobi stated that the APC has “caused hunger among Nigerians,” and advised lawmakers against joining the party.
