On Monday, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara said that he had not committed any crimes that would have allowed the House of Assembly to impeach him.

The governor told his supporters at the Assembly Complex, “Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment.”

The governor promised the state’s citizens they would reap the benefits of democracy and promised to address the issue when it was opportune.

“Let me reassure the residents of Rivers that I will keep working to make sure you reap the benefits of democracy.” “I will speak to the media at the appropriate time,” he declared.

According to OBASANJONEWS24, the House dismissed the Rivers Assembly’s leader, Edison Ehie, on Monday, sparking a new crisis amid speculations of an upcoming impeachment process against Fubara.

Tear gas was being shot outside the Complex as the House members, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, served Fubara with an impeachment notice before running for cover.

Speaking to his supporters who had demonstrated outside the Assembly Complex against the move, the governor claimed he had done nothing to merit the Assembly’s impeachment process.

This happened a few hours after the Assembly Complex caught fire on Sunday night.

Although it was unclear whether the fire was related to the political controversy, there had long been allegations of a schism between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Amidst rumours of a conspiracy to remove Governor Similanyi Fubara, supporters of the governor have invaded the Rivers State House of Assembly.

On Monday morning, songs in the native language were being sang by the men under the governor.

They caused a disturbance as they marched throughout the complex, surrounded by security guards brandishing guns.

As at the time this news was posted, Daily Trust was unable to verify reports that Fubara is also located within the assembly complex.

Previously, the governor’s ardent supporter Edison Ehie was ousted from his position as majority leader of the house.

According to reports, Ehie thwarted the first attempt to begin the impeachment process against Fubara, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister who took over for Nyesom Wike less than six months ago.

Wike and Fubara are said to have gotten along poorly.
