In response to the tragic boat accident that resulted in the loss of five film workers, including the renowned actor Junior Pope, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has taken decisive action to prioritize the safety and welfare of its members.
Emeka Rollas, the President of AGN, has established a special committee with the aim of enhancing safety measures and improving the overall well-being of actors.
The committee, led by veteran actor Emeka Ike and with Jude Orhorha as the secretary, consists of esteemed individuals such as Joke Silva, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Francis Duru, Bimbo Manuel, Patience Ozokwor, Hilda Dokubo, Abubakar Yakubu, Gideon Okeke, Anthony Ogbetere, Femi Branch, and Kevin Uvo.

The committee’s primary objectives include refining existing bylaws to incorporate member welfare, implementing standard safety guidelines, and establishing protocols.
Additionally, they will collaborate with other guilds and associations to ensure comprehensive implementation, recommend disciplinary actions against those who violate safety regulations, and engage with relevant stakeholders to develop industry-wide bylaws.
Furthermore, the committee will explore the possibility of establishing a royalty collecting body or rights collecting society for performers in the Nollywood industry.
In light of recent events, the AGN has also temporarily banned actors from filming in riverine locations or participating in boat rides to mitigate potential risks.
This proactive approach demonstrates the AGN’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and well-being of its members.
